Boy X (16). At his home in Banstead, Surrey , he has everything he could want, except a relationship with his father and brother. He feels alone and neglected. He feels that he would not be missed, so decides to leave home. Out on his own, he begins to endure the harsh nature of Croydon streets; causing crime in order to survive, sleeping rough, meeting dangerous characters. He meets girl Z at a refuge for teens, who appears to be in a similar situation. Her broken family, with abusive, alcoholic parents, forces her to run from home, leaving her on the streets. They become close friends, relying totally on each other. Together, they add to each other’s misery, entering in to a downward spiral of depression. She feels that suicide is the only escape, but he does not think he could go ahead with it. They argue about it, and she runs from him and he looses her in the busy town centre. He is now desperate to find her in order to stop her. On his own again, he realises how much he needs her. They are reunited when he finds her standing on the edge of the fly-over, crying, and staring at the drop below her. With his new found feelings he joins her. They believe that joint suicide means they can be together forever.
